Public spaced is defined as area or place that is open and accessible to all citizens, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, age or socio-economic level and how it effects those citizens. My inquiry question is how the John Lennon Wall which is located in Prague, relates to public space and how it intertwines with transgressive semiotics. Transgressive semiotics is any sign or art that looks like it’s in the wrong place. Therefore, my question really states, is the john Lennon wall transgressive semiotics and how does it relate to public space. During my research, my question hasn’t really changed, I have just been gaining more knowledge on each of the three topics and using the information to see how each of them compare and contrast to one another. One piece of information that I didn’t know about my topic is how relative the John Lennon Wall is to public space. How it affects so many people worldwide. My research, wasn’t much of an eye opener do to the fact that I already knew the majority of information about it, however, it just gave me a better understand of how relevant the wall is to transgressive semiotics and public space.

I want to find out more about how the wall affected peoples. I want to know what people thought when it was created and if changed them and how. I want to know if people thought it was just graffiti and it was in the wrong place or if people found it inspiring. This information is very important because it has to do with my other two topics. It will help me compare and contrast. I am going to use my professor as one source of information and two other books I have found for other sources. I happen to agree with what the wall stands for and information I know about it. I think that it’s very moving and was good for world peace. An argument that I would bring up about my topic is, is the wall that special to people? Do people really think it helped people become there own, or being less separation? Do people think that a wall can be a vital part of a public space? I would bring up those questions to debate the topic.

THESIS: The John Lennon wall has created a certain presents and impact for pubic space not just in Prague, but throughout the entire world.

The first time I read through Sibleys text, I was unaware of what type of writing style he used. At first, I thought he was very opinionated and bias about the subject matter. But after reading through it a second time, I came to the conclusion that he more about facts and going in the debt with the facts. He analyzes both sides of the situations and gives examples on them. His type of writing requires a tremendous amount of research. Therefore, it shows that if you need to a lot of analyzing and researching for your writing to be good. After reading a lot of different types of articles and text this semester, I have found that if your introduction should be simple, so no matter who is reading, they will understand the topic. Besides keeping my opening simple, I am going to site real life examples that I witnessed in my studies abroad, examples from my professors, as well as the research I am and intend to do. My conclusion will consist of summing up all the key points I mentioned throughout the paper.

  • Dickinson, Maggie. “The Making of Space, Race and Place: New York City’s War on Graffiti, 1970-the Present.” 27th ser. 28.1 (2008).

This article discusses NYC’s so called “war on graffiti” from the late 1970s to present day. The text goes over the ways in which the city’s population reacts to the graffiti from the 70s till now.

Quote: “The practice of graffiti and the role of cultural practices more generally in relation to an anti-racist discourse”

This quote is saying that graffiti has more then just colors and shapes to the art work; it has to do with racist discourse as well as cultural practices. This is similar to my topic, hidden meanings on the John Lennon wall.

  • Dickens, Luke. “Placing post-graffiti: the journey of the Peckham Rock.” 15.4 (2008): 471-97.

This article is about the interaction between urban inscription, art and the city, and how it emerges into what we now call “graffiti”. Dickens explains this movement as `art terrorist’.

Quote: “‘“post-graffiti” and “neo-graffiti” are more recent phrases used to describe street art and a

graffiti scene in flux between established ideas and new directions’.”

I found this quote in the body of text where Dickens was describing different types of graffiti. She was stating that these two types of art establish new ides and new directions for the people admiring the work.

As I compare, the John Lennon wall to other famous graffiti pieces, I find a lot of similarities to them. One key element which I found to be related was a significant meaning behind the art work. “The practice of graffiti and the role of cultural practices more generally in relation to an anti-racist discourse” ( Dickinson, p 28 .1) In this quote Dickinson is exaplaining that graffiti has an important role in cultural practices and anti – racist discourse, which is a perfect exmaple of the John Lennon wall. Lennon wall is asking for freedom and for everyone to be free. Which is what I believe dickinson is referring to in her quote. When people look at or talk about graffiti they don’t realize there are very important meanings behind it these art works, yes some are just there because people enjoy vandulism, however majority do it do express there feelings.

The author, Claudia Barbieri has written two articles about graffiti for the New York Times. She is based out of Paris, France. Therefore, all of here examples are from Europe rather then the US. After reading these two sources,” Graffiti Gains New Respect” and “Paris Street Art Becomes Elegant Knuckle-Duster” it has become early to me that Ms. Barieri is very open minded about the subject. Allow it seems she seems favorable for graffiti do to the fact she has written numerous articles the topic, she has given negative examples about graffiti. She is a writer for the New York Times online. Although, most writes are bias and try to hide that fact, I believe that Ms. Barbieri is very honest and less opinionated then most would think. She describes the situation to her audience and compared it to different scenarios. Her audience is very noticeable, it’s mainly towards artist who enjoy graffiti. These articles are for the population who is favorable to this type of art. The websites purpose is a news media site. These articles are very recent and knowledge from the stand point of an outsider looking in on graffiti. Being said, I think the information provided is very relevant along with current facts.

Throughout the entire course, one topic that has over shadowed everything is “what is the inner meaning’. I think you can relate that question into anything you are researching. Therefore, I would like to relate that into the articles I have read and the information already found on the John Lennon wall. “You can see the characteristics of each country through the artists”, said by Barbieri who referring to the graffiti taking place in Paris. When looking at graffiti one of the most important things, is what is behind that art? , why is it in that shape? why was it in that color? In these articles it discusses the art of graffiti and what is the art trying to say. I found it very similar to my topic because when you look at the Lennon wall, people see all colors, people see the huge peace sign and people see the word “Imagine” and think what it means. People understand its more then just art, its “freedom”. In the article it refers how the artists are making numerous works to create a collection in light of creating a story.

Research MEthod

As I begin to do research on my topic of  The John Lennon wall and how it relates to transgressive semiotics, I would like to discover if John Lennon ever thought of transgressive semiotics and how that would relate to communism. I will not being using a method of research. Instead I will be using facts that I learn while I studied abroad in Prague this past semester. The wall is located in Prague, Czech Republic. I went on numerous tours that discussed the wall and its meaning. Therefore, I can contact my tour guides and teachers for further information. The classes were very small which allowed me to become very close with each teacher, especially my architecture one. Being said, we continue you stay in contact through email and he has said he’s happy to help me in anyway. When this topic was brought up in unit one, the wall was the first thing I thought of. When I first saw the wall while abroad, I was amazed, how graffiti made such impact on peoples lives. After reading about transgressive semiotics, I felt that each of these two topics are very intriguing and the both go hand in hang with each other. I am not going to let my biases get involved by just using straight facts that’s I have received from my professors, tour guides and books. Rather then states my opinion on my topic, I will just rely exact data about it. One thing that I am hoping to discover is that John Lennon knew the meaning of transgressive semiotics and public space and had that in mind while creating the John Lennon wall.

As I drive around my neighborhood, whether it is in New Jersey or on my way to New York City, I see tons of advertisements and logos. As I stop and take a look at them, I understand the meaning of some and others I don’t. I understand why some are in a specific spot and some I don’t. This is where public space comes into play. Why these logos or advertisements are in certain places for the population to view. For my sustained research project, I would like to take popular logos that are well known across the world and see whether or not they are transgressive. After going through this section, I gained a lot of knowledge as well as an understanding for the meaning. When I think of transgressive semiotics, certain logos or advertisements pop right into my head. For example, on my way to work everyday I pass a whole wall of graffiti. But the funny thing is everytime I pass it; I have a different opinion about it. Sometimes I think it’s very creative and like the placement of where it is, and other times I think, why they would do it here in such a nice area, it ruins the entire environment. I think that’s why I like the topic of transgressive semiotics because everyday I look at the same exact thing, whether it be graffiti or a logo or even an advertisement and I have a different opinion on it everytime.

For this paper, I would like to choose a few items and talk about why they are transgressive them go ahead and compare my opinions to how the Scollon describes transgressive semiotics in the text.

The picture I have chosen is another piece from Banksy. I chose this photo because I thin it truly represents the meaning of transgressive. The photo is of a corner of the street with a huge flower painted on the side of a building with, a picture of the painter to the left. The flower is in yellow and it looks its connected to the orange lines from the street. After I looked at the photo and the definition of transgressive, I’ve concluded there is no reason for this bright orange plant to be painted in such a dull space. The surrounds are faded like I just mentioned, which is why I don’t understand the need for a bright orange flower. I think the people who walk by this everyday are the ones who will determine if it’s transgressive. During this week’s research, I learned great amount of information about transgressive. For example, why certain signs are located somewhere that they don’t belong or why certain forms are used in certain photos. The book even mentioned a brand of a logo I love and explained the forms of it, which I really enjoy. Again, it really made me ponder why people put things in signs and positioned them the way they arestreet-art-banksy-flower

This advertisement is for Italian restaurant named Marios, which is located on the water. In the advertisement there a two participants, a man’s faces on side of a boat and woman’s face another next to each other. Each of them has a rope going into the ship where the mouths are located. The rope represents a noodle. What makes the advertisement such good quality is that the restaurant is located on the water, therefore they many the people into boats. The modality is very welcoming with normal colors and it gives you a very friendly and funny feeling. I chose this one because the advertisement dragged me and caused me to eat there. The advertisement is very clever. I happen to like thinks that are very iconic and funny. This happens to be both. The restaurant is on the water, and the ad was two peoples faces on boats with ropes in there mouths that is supposed to be noodles. I think the owners/ad designers figured that’s how they would attempt to control social behavior in the public space.

Cresskill High School Sign-Index

The First Picture is of the basketball Courts that I described in my first free write. Now that I have somewhat of an understanding of Public Space, I think the basketball court is where I was first introduced to it. These courts are located right in the center of time. When you drive through town you will always pass by the courts.

The Second photo is of a Monument in memory of those soldiers who gave their lives for their country while on duty in Camp Merritt, which in located in Cresskill. The Monument is where the center of the Camp was and it faces the highway over which more than a million American soldiers passed on their way to and from the World War, 1917 – 1919. I happened to believe that this is the most historical tribute Cresskill has.

The third photo is The Cresskill Jr/ Sr High School sign. I think this is important because this is what brings all the kids in town together. Being that there are two elementary schools, come 7th grade and up everyone enters the same school together.  The sign is Located write as you enter the School, it is the first thing you see every time you enter.

Introduction- Daniel Brody

May 19, 2009 by djbrody

Hello All!!!

My name is Daniel Brody and I will be taking writing 205 with all over you this summer. I am just about finishing up my junior year here at Syracuse. At Syracuse, I have been studying IST. IST wasn’t my first choice when I applied however; I have learned to enjoy it.  I am from a small town in New Jersey called Cresskill. It’s in north jersey, 10 minutes from the George Washington Bridge. This past semester I studied abroad in Prague. It was a very humbling experience that I could not compare to anything that I’ve done in the past. I am a big sports person, being that I’m from New Jersey my favorite teams are the New Jersey Nets and the New York Giants. When I am not at Syracuse, I’m at one of their games depending whether its football or basketball season.
